My 'Made by Hand' series is a bow to city people earning their living by manual work. The portraits speak of people who are keeping our towns alive, while preserving human traditions and artisan knowledge for coming generations. One of my favourites are the Three Melancholic Shoemakers, who, in the backroom of a Tbilisi store, were manually assembling beautiful fabric slippers and soft leather boots. They were proudly showing their skills, and even smiling, eventually. 

Each of the ‘Made by Hand’ monoprints is an original. I paint each picture as a mirror-image by hand on an Indigo-inked plate, and only at the end press the finished painted plate onto Buetten paper.
